apple-sage-garbanzo burgers

i don’t think mike and i have ever made burgers at home before. we’ve sampled many kinds of storebought and restaurantmade vegetarian burgers, of course. and tried all kinds of fake hot dogs and sausages. our absolute favorite are field roast’s apple-sage sausages. they’re sooo good.

so when i read a blog post (from the edible perspective) with a recipe for burgers that replicate the flavors of apple-sage field roast sausages, i knew we had to make them. why haven’t i ever made burgers at home before? this whole meal came together in under 20 minutes, the burgers were FANTASTIC, and i love knowing exactly what goes into them. trust me. apples + sage + garbanzos = the perfect burger. yum!

apple-sage-garbanzo burgers

yields 4 patties
borrowed from edible perspective

  • 1/2c ground oats
  • 1/2 onion (about 1/4c), roughly chopped
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 15oz can of garbanzos (about 1½c), rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 apple (about 1/2c), peeled, grated, and squeezed between paper towels to remove some moisture
  • 1T ground sage
  • 1T oil, plus more for frying
  • 1/2t salt
  • dash of black pepper
    ______________________________
  1. put the oats into a food processor and grind them until they form a rough flour (about 30 seconds – 1 minute of grinding)
  2. take the oat flour out of the food processor
  3. put the onion and garlic into the food processor and blend for about 30 seconds
  4. add the garbanzos, grated apple, sage, oil, salt, and pepper to the food processor
  5. turn on the food processor and process until everything is combined (about 30 seconds)
  6. add the ground oats back in and pulse until the mixture holds together
  7. form four x 5″ burgers with your hands
  8. heat a pan over medium-high heat and add a few tablespoons of oil
  9. allow the burgers to cook for about 5 minutes per side, or until golden brown
  10. serve with your favorite condiments (as you can see in the blurry pic above, mike loves a ton of onions on top) and a big salad and enjoy!
