it’s been quite a week, my friends, full of sadness (a loss in the family), as well as fun (showshoeing at lake tahoe), so i hope you’ll bear with me if this post is a little all over the place.

dinner is served!

i love indian food, but it’s a genre that i haven’t experimented much with in my own kitchen – i prefer to let the experts handle it. but there is a dearth of good indian food restaurants in the town where i live. so this puts me in a bit of a quandry.

dinner is served!

when i bring my leftovers into the lunch room at work (hi, coworkers!), i get a lot of questions about what i’m eating and where i found the recipe. i absolutely love having this kind of conversation, as we can all share our favorite places to find new and delicious ideas. most of my recipes come from vegetarian times, food blogs (see blog roll to the right), and a solid collection of cookbooks i’ve acquired over the years (thanks, friends and fam!). quick saute of veggies, to keep them crunchy

the month of may has been a blur of activity around here, and of course, the first thing to go during this busy time has been finding and testing new recipes. instead, i’ve been sticking to the old standbys because i can easily remember the ingredients off the top of my head while i’m walking through the grocery store, sans list. (since most of you don’t go shopping with me, let me fill you in on my shopping list habit: i rarely go into ANY store without a list in hand!!)  so you can imagine how busy this month has been if i’ve been heading into the store with nary a list or reusable bag in hand.

hi everyone, i’m back from my trip to the midwest, and finally sitting down to post after a long week at work.  i had a fabulous time with my family in indiana and chicago – we had beautiful weather, and spent time celebrating my great uncle’s 99th birthday, looking at pictures with my great aunt (my grandmother’s older sister), walking around the campus of purdue, viewing exhbits at the chicago art institute, taking the “l” to wrigley field, and most importantly, getting to know our family in the midwest a lot better and learning about my norwegian heritage.  i discovered that my love for cooking and welcoming friends into my home is decidedly norweigian, and learned that norwegians get upset when people visit without calling, because they can’t prepare coffee and bake cookies before inviting guests into their homes.  to that end, when our friends came over this weekend, i decided i had to honor my heritage and make some cookies (albeit with them, not before they came over).

you may have noticed that posts have been a little further apart than usual around here lately, and i sincerely apologize. i’ve been spending most of my computer time obsessing over the new features in apple’s iLife ‘09, and to be even more specific, i’ve been consumed with the faces feature in iPhoto. this new feature goes through your iPhoto library (mine dates back to ‘01 with a few scanned pics from earlier years) and identifies the faces in all the photos using fancy face detection software. next, you provide a name to go with the faces of your friends and family members (i used my wedding photos for this because they contain just about everyone we know). after that, the program starts to get scary smart and suggests other photos that might contain these people as well. the program isn’t foolproof, though, and this led to me revisiting every single photo on my computer to correctly identify every single face.
